Tape camcorders sold by the million, and plenty still work. A listing rarely says whether it plays a tape or only powers on, which tapes it takes, how you’ll get the footage onto a computer or whether the battery holds a charge. Each page covers one model, with its story, what it records and plays, what to check in the listing and the eBay listings we’d buy.
Camcorder buyers shop by model number. Tap one to go straight to its page, or read how to check a used camcorder first.

Hi8 is analog tape. Sony rates it at up to 400 lines of horizontal resolution, and you get footage off it by playing the tape into a capture device in real time. MiniDV is digital: 720 by 480 pixels in the US, copied to a computer over FireWire as an exact digital copy. Hi8 looks softer and noisier, MiniDV cleaner. Pick by the tapes you already have and the capture setup you can run.
Only on an older macOS. Apple removed FireWire support in macOS Tahoe 26, released in September 2025, so you need a Mac on macOS Sequoia or earlier. Macs with USB-C ports also need Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter in front of the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, which Apple stopped selling in 2023. Windows still works, though recent versions may need extra FireWire drivers.
Match the tape. Video8 and Hi8 play in any Hi8 camera and in many, not all, Sony Digital8 models. VHS-C plays in a regular VHS deck with an adapter cassette. S-VHS-C needs an S-VHS deck, or a VHS deck with S-VHS quasi playback. MiniDV needs a MiniDV camera or deck, and a Digital8 recording needs a Digital8 camera. The TV system has to match too: NTSC tapes on an NTSC machine.
No. Powering on and showing a live picture only proves the camera side works. Head clogs, condensation lockouts, loading faults and eaten tapes only show up with a cassette in and playing. Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a tape, and for a short video of playback on the screen.
Yes, for the tapes. US camcorders are NTSC, and Sony says an NTSC camera's playback needs an NTSC TV. A PAL tape on a US TV plays, if at all, in black and white or with a rolling picture. Sony's PAL models end in E, like the DCR-TRV27E. Power is the easy part: the Sony adapters we checked are rated up to 240 volts, from 100 or 110.
Only if the picture tells you to. Sony's manuals say to use a dry cleaning cassette when you see noise or mosaic blocks, or the camera asks for it, and not more than five times in one session. They also warn never to use a wet-type cleaning cassette, because it can damage the heads. Old tapes can shed binder and clog heads, so don't test a camera with a tape you care about.
