The VX2100 is the third of Sony's big three-chip MiniDV cameras, after the 1995 VX1000 and the 2000 VX2000, and it arrived in mid 2003. Sony kept the layout people liked, with three 1/3-inch CCDs, a 12x zoom, a manual zoom ring, a focus ring and an exposure dial, then reworked the sensors. Its Advanced HAD CCDs are rated down to 1 lux, a big step from the VX1000's 4 lux, and Sony claimed up to 530 lines of resolution. It also gained a 2.5-inch flip-out screen, Memory Stick stills and analog-to-digital pass-through. There's no XLR input and no USB. Sony shipped it with a hood, a wireless remote and the small NP-F330 battery.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
MiniDV digital video with 12-bit or 16-bit PCM sound: 1 hour in SP or 1.5 hours in LP on a 60-minute cassette.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded in NTSC. Sony warns that LP recordings from another machine may show mosaic noise.
Getting footage off it
The 4-pin DV jack (i.LINK) copies tapes to a computer as an exact digital copy. Sony's spec sheet also lists analog-to-digital pass-through, so analog video into its RCA or S-Video inputs can go out the DV jack to a computer.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. The PAL version is the DCR-VX2100E, and its tapes won't play in color on an NTSC TV.
Battery and power
Sony InfoLithium L-series (NP-F) packs. It came with the small NP-F330, and Sony's battery table lists the NP-F550, NP-F750 and NP-F960. The AC-L15 adapter is its power supply.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.5-inch flip-out LCD with 211,000 dots and a color electronic viewfinder. If one is dim or marked, the other can still prove the camera records and plays.
Should come with it
A battery (it came with an NP-F330) and the AC-L15 adapter
The lens hood, the RMT-811 remote and the A/V cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Sony's manual lists C:21 for condensation (leave it an hour), C:22 for dirty heads (use a DVM12CL cleaning cassette), C:31 or C:32 for other faults and E:61 or E:62 for service. A camera that only powers on hasn't proved its transport.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the LCD is what you want.
02Error codes: Ask whether it has shown a C:31, C:32, E:61 or E:62 code. None is what you want.
03Playback picture: Watch the seller's playback for blocky mosaic patterns or freezes. A clean, steady picture means the heads are fine.
04Model number: Check the label in the photos reads DCR-VX2100. A VX2000 is the older model, and a VX2100E is the PAL version.
05DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. Clean contacts and a seller who has captured from it are good signs.
06Battery: Look for an NP-F series pack, like the NP-F330, F550, F750 or F960, in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
07Screens: Ask for photos of both the LCD and the viewfinder showing a picture. You want no dark patches, lines or dim backlight.
08Rings and lens: Ask whether the zoom and focus rings turn smoothly, and for a close photo of the front glass. Clear glass with no haze or fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the US-located VX2100 titled tested and working at $920 delivered, at the $918 median, because the photo shows a battery, the adapter, an A/V cable, the remote and the hood. Supply is thin, with at least 11 for sale. Most ask $883 to $1,020 delivered, around the $875 to $1,025 band, and the two cheap ones are a $430 US unit with no battery and a $557 Japanese one with free shipping. Ask for a short video of a MiniDV tape playing on the LCD and whether it has shown a C:31, C:32, E:61 or E:62 code, and look for an NP-F pack and the AC-L15 adapter in the photos. Skip the stock-photo listing titled with LCD and finder damage, and the Video Transfer title that two accounts share, one asking $1,450 delivered from the UK.
