Sharp started in 1912 as Tokuji Hayakawa's metal workshop in Tokyo, and it changed how people hold a camcorder. It began in VHS-C, then switched to 8mm in 1992 with the LCD ViewCam, the VL-HL1. Instead of an eyepiece it had a color screen you watched as you filmed, and you could turn it around to film yourself. Sharp calls it a huge success. Wayne Gretzky launched the first ViewCam on US network TV, early ones were also sold in Japan under Nikon's name, and Nintendo's Hirokazu Tanaka was inspired by the ViewCam to develop the Game Boy Camera. Sony followed with its own LCD Handycams. Sharp left the camcorder business in 2006.
