The VL-AH50U is a ViewCam from 2000, and it shows the idea Sharp started with in 1992: you film by watching a screen, not by pressing your eye to a viewfinder. Here that's a 3-inch color LCD, in front of a 16x zoom and a Hi8 tape transport. It shares a service manual with the 8mm-only VL-A40U and A45U and with the VL-AH60U, which is the same camera with a 3.5-inch screen. Load a Hi8 tape and it records Hi8; load a regular 8mm tape and it records standard 8mm. There's no S-Video socket, so capture is composite. It runs on Sharp's nickel-metal-hydride BT-H22 or the longer BT-H32. Sharp left the camcorder business in 2006.

The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
Hi8 when you load a Hi8 tape and standard 8mm when you load a regular 8mm tape. Sharp's AH-series manuals say it picks the format from the tape.
Plays back
NTSC Hi8 and Video8 tapes. Like every analog 8mm camera, it can't play Digital8 recordings.
Getting footage off it
Analog and composite only, since Sharp's manual for this series says it has no S-Video socket. Run the video and audio outputs into a USB capture device and capture in real time.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. The VL-AH50S, AH50E and AH50H are PAL versions, and their tapes won't play in color on a US TV.
Battery and power
Sharp's 3.6-volt nickel-metal-hydride packs: the BT-H22, rated for about 1 hour 35 minutes, or the BT-H32 at about 3 hours 10 minutes. The AC adapter outputs 7 volts.
Viewfinder and screen
A 3-inch color TFT LCD, and no eyepiece in the documentation. The VL-AH60U is the same body with a 3.5-inch screen.
Should come with it
A BT-H22 or BT-H32 battery pack
Sharp's 7-volt AC adapter
An audio and video cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
No model-specific faults are documented. The LCD is the only screen in the documentation, so a dim or dead one is a real problem, and a camera that only powers on hasn't proved its tape transport works.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the LCD is what you want.
02Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A steady picture without heavy snow or lines means the heads are in fair shape.
03LCD: Ask for a photo of the LCD showing a bright scene. An even picture with no dark patches or lines matters, since there's no eyepiece.
04Model number: Check the label in the photos reads VL-AH50U. An AH50S, AH50E or AH50H is a PAL version that won't play in color on a US TV.
05Battery: Check the photos for a BT-H22 or BT-H32 pack. Treat an old one as dead and price it that way.
06Power: Look for Sharp's 7-volt AC adapter in the photos. Without it you're relying on old battery packs alone.
07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
08Eject: Ask whether a cassette loads and ejects smoothly. A door that opens and closes without sticking or grinding is a good sign.
We'd buy the AH50U titled tested for playback and recording at $99 delivered, with a bag, the remote and a power adapter, at the low end of the $95 to $150 band. There are at least 27 for sale, other kits titled tested ask $107 to $172 delivered, and untested ones start at $34. Check the label reads VL-AH50U, since the AH50S, E and H are PAL, and expect composite capture only, since there's no S-Video socket. The 3-inch LCD is the only screen, so ask for a short video of a tape playing on it. Skip the VCR Player Video Transfer copies, one with no seller name, and the $523 UK listing whose photo carries another seller's watermark.
