Canon made its first camcorder, the 8mm VM-E1, in October 1985, and its A1 of 1989 was one of the first Hi8 cameras, with stereo sound. Two years later the Hi8 L1 became the world's first camcorder with interchangeable lenses, an idea Canon brought to DV with the XL1 in February 1998. NASA adopted the XL1 as its official DV camcorder and flew it on the space shuttle, and the handheld GL1 followed in 1999. For families there was the ZR line of MiniDV palmcorders, from the first ZR in 1998 to the ZR960 of 2009, and in the Americas Canon's 8mm cameras wore the ES name until the ES8600 of 2003. Europe knew the same cameras by other names: MV for the ZRs, XM for the GLs and "Hi" names for Hi8.
