The ES8200V is a late Hi8 camera. Canon put it on sale in April 2001, when DV was taking over, and built it especially for markets outside Japan: ES8200V in the Americas, 50Hi in Europe and Asia. Canon gave it a newly designed compact 22x zoom and a single-chip processor, plus a 2.5-inch color flip-out screen, an electronic stabilizer and a built-in 3-watt halogen light. Sound is mono. ES was Canon's name for its 8mm cameras in the Americas from 1994, and this one was followed by the ES8400V and the ES8600 of 2003, the last of the line. If you want a newer-built camera to play a box of Hi8 and Video8 tapes, that late date is the point.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
Hi8 analog video with mono hi-fi sound. A 120-minute cassette holds up to 2 hours in SP.
Plays back
Hi8 and standard 8mm (Video8) tapes from any NTSC 8mm camera. Like every analog 8mm camera, it can't play Digital8 recordings.
Getting footage off it
Analog only. Run the S-Video jack, plus the audio from the A/V minijack, into a USB video capture device and capture in real time. There's no FireWire, so a computer can't copy the tape digitally.
TV system
NTSC, the version sold in the Americas. The PAL version is the Canon 50Hi, so a listing under that name won't play its tapes in color on a US TV.
Battery and power
We couldn't find Canon's manual for it, so we can't confirm which battery it takes. Ask the seller for the battery's model number and whether a charger or AC adapter comes with it.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.5-inch color flip-out LCD and a small black-and-white LCD viewfinder. If the color screen is dim or dead, the viewfinder still lets you check that it records and plays.
Should come with it
A battery and a charger or AC adapter (ask the seller which models)
The A/V cable for the minijack, so you can watch and capture tapes
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
We couldn't find a fault list or a manual for this model, so treat it like any Hi8 camera. A camera that powers on hasn't proved its tape transport or heads work.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
02Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A steady picture without heavy snow or lines means the heads are in fair shape.
03Model number: Check the label in the photos reads ES8200V. A 50Hi is the PAL version and won't play in color on a US TV.
04Battery: Ask the seller for the battery's model number and whether it holds a charge. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
05Power: Check the photos for a charger or AC adapter. Without one you have no way to run the camera or charge the pack.
06Eject: Ask whether the cassette ejects and loads smoothly. A door that opens and closes without sticking or grinding is a good sign.
07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the ES8200V titled tested at $81 delivered, the only one here with a test claim, and plan on a battery and a charger or AC adapter, since its photo shows the camera alone. There are only five listings, and two are identical $165 copies from a seller whose name isn't shown, so the $80 to $170 band isn't a market read. Ask any seller for a short video of a Hi8 or Video8 tape playing back, since powering on proves nothing about the heads or transport, and ask for the battery's model number, because we couldn't confirm which pack it takes. There's no FireWire, so plan to capture from the S-Video output in real time.

The only ES8200V here titled tested, at $81 delivered, but the photo shows the camera alone with its strap and lens cap. Ask what battery and power supply come with it, and for a clip of a tape playing back.
Vintage Canon ES8200V Hi8 8mm Analog Video Camcorder Silver 22x Zoom Tested
No test claim, but it's titled with a charger and asks $34 delivered, less than half of anything else here. It's a gamble worth taking only if you can live with a camera that doesn't play.
