The CCD-TR75E is a PAL Video8 Handycam from around 1990, made for Europe, the UK and Australia. It's a plain design from before flip-out screens: an 8x zoom, a black-and-white viewfinder, Hi-Fi stereo sound on standard 8mm tape and RCA jacks for playback. It records Video8, not Hi8. So who should buy one in the US? Someone with a box of PAL Video8 tapes, maybe from family who lived abroad, who needs a camera that will play them. An NTSC camera can't play those tapes properly, and this one can. Pair it with a capture device or player that handles PAL. If your tapes are NTSC, look at an NTSC Hi8 Handycam instead.

The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
Standard Video8 in PAL, with AFM Hi-Fi stereo sound, in SP or LP. A 90-minute PAL tape holds 1.5 hours in SP and 3 hours in LP. It isn't a Hi8 camera.
Plays back
Video8 tapes recorded in PAL. Like most Video8-only machines, it can't play Hi8 recordings, and no analog 8mm camera plays Digital8.
Getting footage off it
Analog only, through RCA video and audio jacks; there's no S-Video. Capture in real time with a USB video capture device that accepts PAL, or play it into a PAL deck or TV.
TV system
PAL, sold in Europe, the UK and Australia. Its playback needs a PAL TV or a multi-system player. On a US NTSC TV it plays, if at all, in black and white or with a rolling picture.
Battery and power
Sony's older 6-volt packs: it came with an NP-55, and the manual also lists the NP-66H, NP-77 and NP-77H. The AC-V30 adapter came with it.
Viewfinder and screen
A black-and-white electronic viewfinder and no flip-out screen. The viewfinder is the only way to see a picture without a TV, so it has to work.
Should come with it
An NP-55 or NP-77 series battery and the AC-V30 adapter
The A/V cable for the RCA jacks
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The service manual documents no model-specific faults. It's over thirty years old, so assume the battery is dead and treat the tape transport as unproven until you see it play.
01PAL on purpose: Buy it only if your tapes are PAL. On a US TV its playback shows in black and white or rolls, if it shows at all.
02Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a Video8 tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback is what you want.
03Viewfinder: Ask for a photo or video through the black-and-white viewfinder. It's the only screen, so it must show a clear picture.
04Playback picture: Watch the seller's playback for heavy snow or noise. A steady picture means the heads are in fair shape.
05Battery: Look for an NP-55 or NP-77 series pack in the photos. Treat a pack this old as dead and price it that way.
06Power: Check the AC-V30 adapter is in the photos; it may have a UK or European plug. It lets you test the camera without a battery.
07Model number: Check the label in the photos reads CCD-TR75E. It records Video8 only, so it won't play Hi8 tapes.
Buy the TR75E only if your tapes are PAL Video8 from the UK, Europe or Australia, since a US NTSC TV shows its playback in black and white or with a rolling picture, if at all. We'd start with the CCD-TR75E from a 99.8% German seller at $105 delivered, or the UK one with its power cable at $117, both under the $118 median, though neither is titled tested and much of the cost is shipping from Europe. There are at least 12 for sale, and US listings titled CCD-TR75 without the E (one says Japanese symbols on the unit) are probably the Japanese NTSC model, so check the label reads CCD-TR75E. It records and plays Video8 only, not Hi8, through RCA jacks into a PAL-capable USB capture device, so ask for a short video of a tape playing in the viewfinder. Skip the Video Transfer title two accounts list at $191 and $500 delivered.
