Sharp invented the LCD-first camcorder. Its first ViewCam, the VL-HL1 of 1992, swapped the eyepiece for a color screen you watched as you filmed, and Sharp calls it a huge success. The VL-E660S is a late-90s descendant from a 1998 service manual, and it's an export model for PAL countries. It records standard 8mm (Video8), not Hi8, through a 16x zoom, and you watch everything on a 3-inch color LCD. It's a fit if you have PAL Video8 tapes to play or digitize. We couldn't find a US version of this exact model, so if your tapes are NTSC, look at Sharp's Hi8 VL-AH50U or VL-AH130U instead.
Standard 8mm (Video8) on MP tape, in PAL. A P5-120 cassette holds 120 minutes. It doesn't record Hi8.
Plays back
PAL Video8 tapes. Like most Video8 machines it isn't built to play Hi8 recordings, and NTSC tapes from a US camera won't play properly on it.
Getting footage off it
Analog only: a video output and an audio output, with no S-Video. Capture means playing tapes in real time into a capture device that accepts PAL.
TV system
PAL. This is an export model, not a US one. On an NTSC-only US TV its playback shows in black and white, rolls or doesn't show at all, so it suits people with PAL Video8 tapes from places like the UK, Australia or Hong Kong and a PAL-capable TV or capture setup.
Battery and power
Sharp's 3.6-volt BT-H22 nickel-metal-hydride pack. Its AC adapter outputs 4.5 volts, while later AH-series ViewCams use 7 volts, so match the adapter to this model.
Viewfinder and screen
A 3-inch color TFT LCD, and the manual documents no eyepiece. A dim or dead LCD leaves you filming blind.
Should come with it
A BT-H22 battery pack
Sharp's 4.5-volt AC adapter
An audio and video cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
No model-specific faults are documented. The LCD is the only screen, so a dim or dead one makes the camera hard to use, and a camera that only powers on hasn't proved its tape transport works.
01TV system: Check the label reads VL-E660S and plan for PAL. A US TV won't show its playback in color, so you need a PAL or multi-system TV or capture device.
02Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the LCD is what you want.
03Tape type: Ask what tapes the seller tested it with. Standard 8mm (Video8) tapes are the right ones, since it doesn't record Hi8.
04LCD: Ask for a photo of the LCD showing a bright scene. An even picture with no dark patches or lines matters, since there's no eyepiece.
05Battery: Check the photos for a BT-H22 pack. Treat an old one as dead and price it that way.
06Power: Look for Sharp's 4.5-volt AC adapter in the photos. A 7-volt adapter from a later ViewCam is the wrong match.
07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the camera-only E660 titled tested and working at $51 delivered, at the bottom of the $50 to $110 band, and add a BT-H22 pack and Sharp's 4.5-volt adapter. The catalog lists the E660 as a PAL export that records standard 8mm (Video8), not Hi8, so it suits PAL tapes from places like the UK or Australia played on a PAL-capable TV or capture setup. Many US sellers title theirs VL-E660U, so check the label, and ask whether it plays NTSC and for a short video of a tape playing on the LCD, its only screen. There are at least 17 for sale, untested ones start at $37 delivered, and the $38 auction with a bag, batteries and a remote will climb. Skip the $125 VCR-player listing with no seller name and the $134 one shipping from Canada, both about twice the median.
