JVC began in Yokohama in 1927 as the Japanese arm of the Victor Talking Machine Company, and in 1976 its engineers introduced VHS. Six years later JVC shrank the same tape into the compact VHS-C cassette, which plays in a full-size VHS deck through an adapter, and in 1984 it launched its first camcorder, the GR-C1. In 2001 JVC won an Emmy for pioneering consumer camcorders. S-VHS followed in 1987 with a much sharper picture, and JVC carried it into compact S-VHS-C cameras like the GR-SXM340. By the late 90s it was making MiniDV too, from the GR-DVL9500 to the small GR-D series. JVC merged with Kenwood in 2008. Its US models end in U.
