The GR-SXM340 is a late JVC S-VHS-C camcorder, from a 2001 manual it shares with the SXM740, SXM540 and SXM240. S-VHS was JVC's sharper version of VHS, launched in 1987, and this camera records it on compact cassettes. It can also record S-VHS ET, JVC's way of getting S-VHS quality onto an ordinary VHS-C tape, or plain VHS. The 340 has a 2.5-inch flip-out screen, a 16x zoom and S-Video out, plus a jack that sent still frames to a computer with the supplied cable and software, unusual on an analog camera. The catch is playback. S-VHS recordings won't play correctly in a normal VHS deck, so plan to capture from the camera itself.
Tape check
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
JVC's manual lists codes E01 to E06 as the camera going into safeguard mode: remove and reattach the battery. If the code comes back, it needs service.

Buying guide
No SXM340 for sale right now is titled as working, so treat every one as untested and pay accordingly. At least 12 are listed, the untested ones ask $29 to $85 delivered, and the $40 to $220 band is stretched by dealer listings at $300 to $655. The gamble we'd take is the $37 untested camera shown with a battery, a bag, cables and the manual. Ask any seller to record and play a tape in S-VHS mode and send a short video of the playback, and plan to capture from the camera's S-Video output, since a normal VHS deck can't play S-VHS recordings correctly. Skip the $655 Video Transfer listing from the UK, whose title also runs on a US account at $300.
$36.93est. delivered
Untested and sold as is, but at $37 delivered it's among the cheapest here, and the photo shows a battery, a bag, cables and the manual. Ask for a video of a tape playing before you buy, and budget for an AP-V10U to AP-V12U adapter if none comes with it.
