The GR-AX800 is a 1995 JVC VHS-C camcorder, the year its service manual is dated, and dealers advertised it as new in Video Magazine that summer. It sat between the GR-AX700 and the GR-AX900 in JVC's line, and a period sourcebook filed it under step-up features with no color viewfinder, which was the AX900's job. So you get a 12x zoom, a 120x digital zoom, a black-and-white viewfinder and a remote, and the adapter JVC called the VHS PlayPak, which lets the tapes play in a full-size VHS deck. It's a mid-90s family camcorder in the plainest sense, on the compact tape JVC invented.

The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
NTSC VHS-C, analog, in SP or EP. A TC-40 tape holds 40 minutes in SP or 120 minutes in EP.
Plays back
VHS-C tapes recorded on any NTSC VHS-C camera. With the supplied C-P7U adapter, which JVC called the VHS PlayPak, its tapes also play in a full-size VHS deck.
Getting footage off it
Analog only. Run the video and audio outputs into a USB capture device and capture in real time, or play the tape in a VHS deck through the adapter. There's no FireWire or S-Video.
TV system
NTSC, the US model (sold as the GR-AX800U). Its tapes play on any NTSC VHS deck or TV through the adapter.
Battery and power
JVC's 6-volt BN-V packs. It came with a BN-V12U, and JVC lists the BN-V22U, BN-V25U and BN-V60U as options. The AA-V11U charges packs.
Viewfinder and screen
Only a 0.5-inch black-and-white viewfinder tube; the step-up GR-AX900 had the color one. There's no flip-out screen, so the viewfinder has to work.
Should come with it
The C-P7U VHS PlayPak adapter cassette
A BN-V12U or other BN-V pack and the AA-V11U charger
The RM-V705U remote
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
No model-specific faults are documented. Original packs are around thirty years old, and a camera that only powers on hasn't proved its tape transport works.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a VHS-C tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on a TV is what you want.
02Playback picture: Ask for a photo of a tape playing on a TV, through the adapter in a VCR or from the camera's output. A steady picture without heavy snow or lines means the heads are in fair shape.
03Viewfinder: Ask for a photo through the viewfinder with the camera on. It's the only screen, so it should be bright and sharp.
04Adapter: Check the photos for the C-P7U PlayPak adapter. Without it you can't play the tapes in a VHS deck.
05Battery and charger: Look for a BN-V pack and the AA-V11U charger in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
06Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
07Eject: Ask whether a cassette loads and ejects smoothly. A door that opens and closes without sticking or grinding is a good sign.
No AX800 for sale right now is titled as working or even powering on, so every one is a gamble on the tape transport, and the prices reflect it. At least 11 are listed at $22 to $52 delivered, most within the $30 to $45 band, and the gamble we'd take is the $22 kit with two batteries, the charger and the manual. For $30 delivered there's also one with a battery still in its package, the charger and a bag. Before buying any, ask the seller to play a VHS-C tape and send a short video through the viewfinder, its only screen, or on a TV. None of these titles mention the C-P7U PlayPak adapter, which you need to play the tapes in a VHS deck, and original BN-V packs are around thirty years old, so price any included battery as dead.

Nothing in the title says it works, but $22 delivered gets the camera with two batteries, the charger and the manual, less than any other listing here. Treat the packs as dead until they hold a charge, and ask for a video of a tape playing before you buy.
