Panasonic sold the PV-A206 as the Palmcorder IQ, and its manual dates from 1995. It was near the bottom of Panasonic's range, yet Consumer Guide named it a Best Buy in 1996, pointing out that it used the full-size video head cylinder from a home VCR and set its recording settings automatically. That's what it's for: you point it and record. You get a 14x zoom, a small color viewfinder and a single audio track, and it came with the VHS PlayPak adapter that lets the tapes play in a regular VHS deck. It's a straightforward way into VHS-C home video.

Records
NTSC VHS-C, analog, with one audio track.
Plays back
VHS-C tapes recorded on any NTSC VHS-C camera. With the supplied PV-P1A VHS PlayPak adapter, its tapes also play in a full-size VHS deck.
Getting footage off it
Analog only. Use the supplied A/V cable into a USB capture device and capture in real time, or play the tape in a VHS deck through the PlayPak. There's no FireWire.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. Its tapes play on any NTSC VHS deck or TV through the PlayPak.
Battery and power
Panasonic's PV-BP packs. It came with a PV-BP15, and Panasonic lists the longer PV-BP17 and PV-BP18. The PV-A17 adapter runs it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
Only a 0.5-inch color LCD viewfinder. There's no flip-out screen, so the viewfinder has to work.
Should come with it
The PV-P1A VHS PlayPak adapter
A PV-BP15 or longer PV-BP battery and the PV-A17 adapter
The A/V cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
No model-specific faults are documented. Original packs are around thirty years old, and a camera that only powers on hasn't proved its tape transport works.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a VHS-C tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on a TV is what you want.
02Playback picture: Ask for a photo of a tape playing on a TV, through the PlayPak in a VCR or from the camera. A steady picture without heavy snow or lines means the heads are in fair shape.
03Viewfinder: Ask for a photo through the viewfinder with the camera on. It's the only screen, so it should be bright and in color.
04PlayPak: Check the photos for the PV-P1A PlayPak adapter. Without it you can't play the tapes in a VHS deck.
05Battery and power: Look for a PV-BP15 or other PV-BP pack and the PV-A17 adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
06Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
07Eject: Ask whether a cassette loads and ejects smoothly. A door that opens and closes without sticking or grinding is a good sign.
No PV-A206 here is titled tested or working, so we'd start with the cheapest kit, $29 delivered with a bag and a charger, and ask the seller for a playback video before buying. There are at least 10 for sale, untested ones start at $23 delivered, and the $40 to $55 band buys a battery, a charger or a bag, never a test claim. Ask any seller for a short video of a VHS-C tape playing back and a photo through the viewfinder, since it's the only screen. It shipped with the PV-P1A PlayPak adapter for playing tapes in a VHS deck, and none of these titles names one, so plan on finding an adapter cassette. Skip the $97 kit, about twice the median with no test claim, and check the label on the pawn-shop listing whose camera looks different.
