The PV-L580 is a Panasonic Palmcorder PalmSight from around 2000, judging by the dates in its manual, which it shares with the PV-L680. PalmSight was Panasonic's name for the flip-out screen, 2.5 inches on the 580 and 4 inches on the 680, which also added a light. It's a late VHS-C camera, with an 18x zoom, electronic image stabilization and four video heads plus a flying erase head for clean edits. It came with the VHS PlayPak adapter, so its tapes play in a regular VHS deck. If you want the VHS-C home video look but would rather frame shots on a screen than through an eyepiece, it's a natural pick.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
NTSC VHS-C, analog, with one audio track. Four rotary heads and a flying erase head give cleaner joins between scenes.
Plays back
VHS-C tapes recorded on any NTSC VHS-C camera. With the supplied PV-P1 VHS PlayPak adapter, its tapes also play in a full-size VHS deck.
Getting footage off it
Analog only. Use the A/V output into a USB capture device and capture in real time, or play the tape in a VHS deck through the PlayPak. There's no FireWire.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. Its tapes play on any NTSC VHS deck or TV through the PlayPak.
Battery and power
Panasonic's PV-BP packs. It came with a PV-BP15. Check the AC adapter's model number against the manual, since our scan of it isn't clear enough to name.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.5-inch flip-out LCD, which Panasonic called PalmSight, plus a small 0.4-inch viewfinder. If the LCD is dim or dead, the viewfinder still lets you check that it records and plays.
Should come with it
The PV-P1 VHS PlayPak adapter
A PV-BP15 battery and the AC adapter
The A/V cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
No model-specific faults are documented. Original packs are old by now, and a camera that only powers on hasn't proved its tape transport works.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a VHS-C tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
02Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A steady picture without heavy snow or lines means the heads are in fair shape.
03Screen: Ask for a photo of the flip-out LCD showing a picture. A bright screen without dark patches or lines is what you want.
04PlayPak: Check the photos for the PV-P1 PlayPak adapter. Without it you can't play the tapes in a VHS deck.
05Battery and power: Look for a PV-BP15 pack and the AC adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
06Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
07Eject: Ask whether a cassette loads and ejects smoothly. A door that opens and closes without sticking or grinding is a good sign.
We'd buy the PV-L580 bundle titled tested and works at $195 delivered, with four batteries, a charger and a case. Only two are for sale, so the $80 to $160 band isn't a market read, and the other one, at $45 delivered, makes no test claim and is titled with a 4-inch screen, the PV-L680's size. Whichever you pick, ask for a short video of a VHS-C tape playing on the flip-out screen, and check for the PV-P1 PlayPak adapter, since without it the tapes won't play in a VHS deck. It's analog only, so capture runs from the A/V output into a USB capture device in real time.
