The GR-DVL310 was the starting point of JVC's 2000 MiniDV line, which JVC called CyberCam. Its manual dates from 2000, and it shares that manual with three step-up models. The DVL510 added a memory card for stills, the DVL815 and DVL915 bigger screens and a color viewfinder, and only the top DVL915 took an analog video input. So the 310 is the plain one: a 1/4-inch CCD, a 10x zoom, a 2.5-inch flip-out screen and a 4-pin DV jack that works both ways. Consumer Reports grouped the GR-DVL310U and its siblings as very good. It's a compact, simple way to record MiniDV and to copy tapes to a computer over FireWire.

The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
DV on MiniDV cassettes, in SP or LP, with 16-bit two-channel or 12-bit four-channel audio.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera. Sony warns that LP recordings can show mosaic noise on a different camera, so LP tapes play best on the camera that made them.
Getting footage off it
The 4-pin DV in/out jack (FireWire) copies the tape to a computer as an exact digital file. Apple removed FireWire support from macOS Tahoe in 2025, so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. S-Video and A/V outputs cover analog capture.
TV system
NTSC, the US model (sold as the GR-DVL310U). JVC also made a PAL GR-DVL310 for other markets, so check the listing says NTSC or ships from the US.
Battery and power
JVC BN-V400 series packs. It came with a BN-V408U, and JVC lists the longer BN-V416U and BN-V428U. The AP-V10U adapter runs it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.5-inch flip-out LCD and a small black-and-white LCD viewfinder. If the flip-out screen is dim or dead, the viewfinder still lets you check that it records and plays.
Should come with it
A BN-V408U or longer BN-V400 series battery
The AP-V10U AC adapter
The A/V and S-Video cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
JVC's manual lists codes E01 to E06 as the camera going into safeguard mode: it powers off, and you remove and reattach the battery. If the code comes back, it needs service.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
02Error codes: Ask whether it has ever shown an E01 to E06 safeguard message. None, or one that cleared after reattaching the battery, is fine.
03Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
04DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. The socket should be clean and undamaged, since it's how footage gets to a computer.
05Model number: Check the label in the photos reads GR-DVL310U, the US version. A plain GR-DVL310 from abroad may be PAL.
06Battery and power: Look for a BN-V400 series pack and the AP-V10U adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the DVL310 titled working with its power cord at $135 delivered, the only one here with a working claim, and add a BN-V400 series battery, since it comes without one. That's just over the $50 to $130 band, because most of the at least 12 listed are untested or say nothing. Kits with a battery and charger but no test claim ask $85 and $125 delivered, and untested cameras start at $21. Whichever you pick, ask for a short video of a MiniDV tape playing back and whether it has shown an E01 to E06 error, and check the 4-pin DV jack in the photos, since it's how tapes get to a computer. Skip the $448 listing, more than five times the median for a camera, a remote and an adapter.

The only DVL310 here titled working, and the photo shows its screen lit with a picture and the power cord attached. There's no battery, so add a BN-V408U or longer pack, and ask for a clip of a tape playing back.
JVC GR-DVL310U Digital MiniDV Camcorder W Power Cord / Working (No Battery)
Untested with no battery, but it asks $21 delivered, well under the band. It's worth the gamble if you already have a BN-V400 pack or the AP-V10U adapter to try it with.
