The DCR-TRV27 is a 2002 MiniDV Handycam from a family Sony sold alongside the TRV16, TRV18 and TRV25. What set it apart was the screen. Its 3.5-inch flip-out LCD was a size up from the TRV25's 2.5-inch, and it kept a color viewfinder too. Inside is a small 1/4.7-inch CCD that records 690,000-pixel video and one-megapixel stills to Memory Stick, behind a Carl Zeiss 10x zoom. Sony packed in NightShot, Super NightShot and Color Slow Shutter for dim light. It has nearly every jack you could want, with DV in and out, analog A/V in and out, S-Video, USB, LANC and a mic input, so it works as a capture deck as well as a camera.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
MiniDV digital video with 12-bit or 16-bit PCM sound: 1 hour in SP or 1.5 hours in LP on a 60-minute cassette. Stills go to Memory Stick.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded in NTSC. Sony warns that LP recordings may show mosaic noise when played on a different camera or deck.
Getting footage off it
The 4-pin DV jack (i.LINK) copies tapes to a computer as an exact digital copy. It also has S-Video and A/V in and out, plus USB for viewing tape images and Memory Stick stills on a PC.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. The PAL version is the DCR-TRV27E, and its tapes won't play in color on an NTSC TV.
Battery and power
Sony InfoLithium M-series packs. It came with the NP-FM50, and Sony's AC adapter runs it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
A big 3.5-inch flip-out LCD and a color electronic viewfinder. If the LCD is dim or has lines, the viewfinder still lets you check it records and plays.
Should come with it
An NP-FM50 battery and Sony's AC adapter
The A/V cable and the USB cable
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Sony's manual lists C:21 for condensation (leave it an hour), C:22 for dirty heads, C:31 or C:32 for other faults you can try to clear, and E:20, E:61 or E:62 for service.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
02Error codes: Ask whether it has shown a C:31, C:32 or any E code. None is what you want.
03Playback picture: Watch the playback for blocky mosaic patterns, freezes or a blue screen. A clean picture means the heads aren't clogged.
04Model number: Check the label in the photos reads DCR-TRV27. A TRV27E is the PAL version, and a TRV25 has the smaller screen.
05LCD: Ask for a photo of the 3.5-inch screen showing a picture. You want no dark patches, lines or dim backlight.
06DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. Clean contacts and a seller who has used it are good signs.
07Battery: Look for an NP-FM50 or another M-series InfoLithium pack in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
08Lens: Ask for a close photo of the front glass with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze or fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the TRV27 titled tested for playback at $114 delivered, under the $120 to $200 band, since its photo shows a tape playing on the screen with a battery, the remote and A/V cables. There are at least 36 for sale, and camera-only units with no test claim start at $59 delivered, while an $80 one is titled for playback and transfer only. Its 4-pin DV jack copies tapes to a computer as an exact digital copy, so ask for a short video of a MiniDV tape playing on the 3.5-inch LCD and whether it has shown a C:31, C:32 or any E code. Pick one with the NP-FM50 and Sony's AC adapter, or budget for both, since several sellers offer a battery with no charger for $101 to $133. Skip the $485 boxed kit, about three times the median, and the battery-no-charger title two accounts share.

The lowest-priced TRV27 at $59 with free shipping, from a 99.9% seller. The title makes no test claim and names no battery or charger, so ask for a video of a tape playing back and budget for an NP-FM50 and the AC adapter.
Titled tested for playback, and the photo shows a tape playing on the LCD with a battery, the remote and A/V cables. It's under the band from a 100% seller, though there's no charger in the photo, so plan on Sony's AC adapter.
