The PV-GS35 was the top model of Panasonic's 2005 MiniDV trio, alongside the PV-GS19 and PV-GS31, and CE Lifestyles magazine reviewed it. It earns the top spot with three things the cheaper models don't have: the longest zoom of the three at 30x, an S-Video output and a stereo mic jack. Otherwise it's the same small camera, with a 1/6-inch CCD, electronic stabilization, a 2.5-inch flip-out screen, a color viewfinder, SD stills, USB and a 4-pin DV jack that works both ways. The mic jack makes it the one to pick from the trio if sound matters to you, and S-Video gives a cleaner analog connection than the plain A/V cable.

Records
DV on MiniDV cassettes, in SP or LP. It also saves stills to SD cards and works as a USB webcam.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera. Sony warns that LP recordings can show mosaic noise on a different camera, so LP tapes play best on the camera that made them.
Getting footage off it
The 4-pin DV in/out jack (FireWire) copies the tape to a computer as an exact digital file. Apple removed FireWire support from macOS Tahoe in 2025, so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. S-Video and A/V outputs cover analog capture.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. Panasonic's PAL version is the NV-GS35, so look for the PV- prefix.
Battery and power
Panasonic's CGA-DU and CGR-DU packs. It came with a CGA-DU12, and Panasonic also lists the CGR-DU06 and the longer CGA-DU21. The PV-DAC14 adapter runs it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.5-inch flip-out LCD and a color viewfinder. If the LCD is dim or dead, the viewfinder still lets you check that it records and plays.
Should come with it
A CGA-DU12 or other CGA-DU battery
The PV-DAC14 AC adapter
The A/V and USB cables
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Panasonic's manuals for this family show head-cleaning and condensation (DEW) warnings. No model-specific faults are documented.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
02Warnings: Ask whether it has shown a head-cleaning or DEW warning. None, or one that cleared, is fine.
03Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
04DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. The socket should be clean and undamaged, since it's how footage gets to a computer.
05Which GS: Check the label reads PV-GS35, since the GS19 and GS31 look alike. Only the GS35 has S-Video and a mic jack.
06Battery and power: Look for a CGA-DU12 or other CGA-DU pack and the PV-DAC14 adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the GS35 titled working with two batteries, a charger and the remote at $110 with free shipping, just under the $116 median of the $75 to $140 band. There are at least 8 for sale, and the cheapest one titled tested is $88 delivered, while the two camera-only units at $50 to $55 both say to read the description for faults. It's the one of Panasonic's 2005 trio with S-Video and a mic jack, and its 4-pin DV jack copies tapes to a computer digitally, so check that port in the photos and ask for a short video of a tape playing back. Skip the two VCR-player listings with no seller name, the same title at $140 and $145 delivered.
