The PV-GS85 is one of Panasonic's last MiniDV palmcorders, a 2007 camera from a manual it shares with the PV-GS80. The 85 adds an SD card slot that takes the then-new SDHC cards, a USB webcam mode and a built-in LED video light. Underneath is a single 1/6-inch CCD behind a 32x zoom with an optical image stabilizer, a 2.7-inch flip-out screen and a 4-pin DV jack that works both ways. Some listings describe it as a three-chip camera. Panasonic's manual lists one CCD. It's a late, light and simple way to shoot MiniDV and copy tapes to a computer, as long as you have a way to connect FireWire.

The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
DV on MiniDV cassettes, in SP or LP. It also saves stills to SD or SDHC cards up to 4 GB, and works as a USB webcam.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera. Sony warns that LP recordings can show mosaic noise on a different camera, so LP tapes play best on the camera that made them.
Getting footage off it
The 4-pin DV in/out jack (FireWire) copies the tape to a computer as an exact digital file. Apple removed FireWire support from macOS Tahoe in 2025, so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. There's also an A/V output for analog capture.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. Panasonic's PAL version is the NV-GS85, so a listing with an NV- model number isn't the camera for US tapes.
Battery and power
Panasonic's CGR-DU and CGA-DU packs. It came with a CGR-DU06, and Panasonic lists the longer CGA-DU12 and CGA-DU21. The PV-DAC14 adapter runs it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.7-inch flip-out LCD and a color viewfinder. If the LCD is dim or dead, the viewfinder still lets you check that it records and plays.
Should come with it
A CGR-DU06 or longer CGA-DU battery
The PV-DAC14 AC adapter
The A/V and USB cables
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Panasonic's manual shows a NEED HEAD CLEANING warning when the heads clog, and tells you to use a DV head cleaner. No model-specific faults are documented.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
02Head cleaning: Ask whether it has shown the NEED HEAD CLEANING warning. None, or one that cleared after a DV head-cleaning tape, is fine.
03Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
04Single chip: Ignore any listing that calls it a 3-CCD camera. Panasonic's manual lists one 1/6-inch CCD.
05DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. The socket should be clean and undamaged, since it's how footage gets to a computer.
06Model number: Check the label in the photos reads PV-GS85. An NV-GS85 is the PAL version.
07Battery and power: Look for a CGR-DU06 or CGA-DU pack and the PV-DAC14 adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
08Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the GS85 bundle titled tested and works at $211 delivered, the only one here sold as working, with a bag, a charger, an A/V cable and MiniDV tapes in the photo. That's about $50 over the $75 to $160 band, and with only six for sale the band is a rough guide. A camera alone with no test claim asks $114 delivered, and one titled untested asks $38 with free shipping. Its 4-pin DV jack is the reason to buy one for tape transfers, so check that port in the photos and ask for a short video of a tape playing back and whether it has shown the NEED HEAD CLEANING warning. Pick one with a CGR-DU or CGA-DU pack and the PV-DAC14 adapter, or budget for both, and skip the VCR-player listing with no seller name.

The only GS85 here titled tested and working, at $211 delivered, and the photo shows a bag, a charger, an A/V cable and MiniDV tapes. It's over the band and the title doesn't say a tape was played, so ask for a short playback clip before paying for the kit.
