The DCR-HC42 is a small MiniDV Handycam from 2005, sold beside the cheaper HC32 and sharing its manual. Sony gave the HC42 a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 12x zoom, a color viewfinder where the HC32 has black and white, and a 2.7-inch widescreen touch panel that runs the menus. It records true 16:9 as well as 4:3, and it weighs only 410 g. The catch is where the jacks went. The camera itself has an A/V jack and LANC, while the DV and USB jacks live on the Handycam Station dock that came in the box. So if you want FireWire capture, the dock matters as much as the camera.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
MiniDV digital video, 60 minutes in SP or 90 in LP on a 60-minute cassette, in 16:9 or 4:3. Stills go to Memory Stick Duo.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded in NTSC. Sony warns that LP recordings may show mosaic noise when played on a different camera or deck.
Getting footage off it
Sony's spec page puts the 4-pin DV jack (i.LINK) and USB on the supplied Handycam Station dock, the DCRA-C121, so without the dock there's no FireWire capture. The camera's own A/V jack gives composite, S-Video and audio through the A/V cable, and Sony's signal-convert function can pass analog video in to DV out.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. Check the label reads DCR-HC42, since its tapes need an NTSC TV or deck.
Battery and power
Sony InfoLithium P-series packs, which are smaller than the M-series. It came with the NP-FP50, and the NP-FP70 and NP-FP90 also fit. The AC-L25 adapter is its power supply.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.7-inch widescreen LCD that's also the touch panel for menus, plus a color viewfinder. A touch layer that doesn't respond makes settings hard to reach.
Should come with it
The Handycam Station dock (DCRA-C121), which carries the DV and USB jacks
An NP-FP50 battery and the AC-L25 adapter
The A/V cable for the camera's A/V jack
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Sony's manual lists C:21 for condensation (leave it an hour), C:22 for dirty heads, C:31 or C:32 for other faults and E:61 or E:62 for service. A listing without the Handycam Station has no FireWire port.
01Handycam Station: Check the DCRA-C121 dock is in the photos. Without it you lose the DV and USB jacks.
02Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
03Touch screen: Ask whether the touch panel responds across the whole screen. It runs the menus, so it should react to every tap.
04Playback picture: Watch the playback for blocky mosaic patterns or freezes. A clean picture means the heads aren't clogged.
05Model number: Check the label in the photos reads DCR-HC42. An HC32 has a black-and-white viewfinder and a different lens.
06Battery: Look for a P-series pack like the NP-FP50 in the photos. M-series packs from older Handycams won't fit.
07Power: Check the AC-L25 adapter is in the photos. It lets you test the camera even if the battery is dead.
We'd buy the HC42 titled tested at $125 delivered, just under the $127 median, with the battery in the photo but no charger, so add the AC-L25 adapter. There are at least 13 for sale, most asking $125 to $141 delivered, and for tape transfers the one to ask about is the $130 listing with the docking station, since the HC42's DV and USB jacks are on that Handycam Station rather than the camera. Without the dock you capture in analog through the A/V cable. Ask for a short video of a MiniDV tape playing on the touch screen and whether the touch panel responds everywhere. Skip the Video Transfer title two accounts list at $300 and $523 delivered, more than double the median.
