The ZR100 went on sale in January 2005 as a small, simple MiniDV camera: 430 g, a 20x zoom and a 2.4-inch flip-out screen. Japan sold the same camera as the FV500 and Europe as the MV800. Canon's notes on the FV500 say it was the first of its entry-level models with a wide 16:9 mode that uses the full width of the CCD, and it runs on Canon's DIGIC DV processor. Canon kept it bare. There's no card slot, no S-Video and no USB, just a DV port, an A/V minijack and a mic input. That makes it a camera for recording to tape and copying over FireWire, and nothing else. It takes the same NB-2L batteries as several Canon compacts of the time.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
DV on MiniDV cassettes, in SP or LP. An 80-minute cassette holds 80 minutes in SP and 120 in LP. There's no card slot, so it records video only.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera. Sony warns that LP recordings can show mosaic noise on a different camera, so LP tapes play best on the camera that made them.
Getting footage off it
A 4-pin DV in/out terminal (IEEE 1394, the same thing as FireWire) is the way to copy tapes to a computer with no loss. Apple removed FireWire support in macOS Tahoe (2025), so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. Otherwise there's only the A/V minijack for composite video.
TV system
NTSC, made for the Americas. Europe got it as the PAL MV800 or MV800i and Japan as the FV500, so check the name on the listing.
Battery and power
Canon NB-2L family packs at 7.4 V. It came with an NB-2LH, and Canon lists the NB-2L, BP-2L12 and BP-2L14 as options. Canon lists the CA-570 Compact Power Adapter for it.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.4-inch flip-out LCD and a small 0.33-inch color viewfinder. If the LCD has dark patches or lines, the viewfinder still lets you test the camera.
Should come with it
An NB-2L family battery (it came with an NB-2LH)
The CA-570 Compact Power Adapter
The A/V cable for the minijack
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Canon's ZR manuals say to clean the heads only with a dry cleaning cassette, since wet ones can damage them. With no S-Video or USB, a damaged DV port leaves only composite video out, so that port matters.
01Model number: Check the label in the photos reads ZR100. Bundles of several ZR models are common, so make sure this one is in it.
02Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
03Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
04DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV terminal in the photos. The pins should be straight and the socket undamaged, since it's the only digital way out.
05Screen: Ask for a photo of the flip-out screen with the camera on. It should be evenly lit with no dark patches or lines.
06Battery and power: Look for an NB-2L family pack and the CA-570 adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the ZR100 titled everything works with its power adapter and a bag at $69 delivered, in the middle of the $55 to $95 band most listings ask, and add an NB-2L family battery, since none is shown. Of at least 29 for sale, the cheapest titled tested is a camera alone at $38 delivered, and kits with a charger and battery ask $90 to $117. Nothing here says a tape was recorded and played back, so ask for a short video of a MiniDV tape playing, and check the 4-pin DV port in the photos, since with no S-Video or USB it's the only digital way to copy tapes. Skip the $65 listing whose photo shows a VIXIA HF R100, a different Canon camera.
