JVC GR-D70
The GR-D70 is a compact JVC MiniDV camera from a 2002 manual it shares with the GR-D90 and GR-D30. The D70 sits in the middle. It has the same body as the D30, but adds a slot for SD or MultiMediaCard stills, USB, a remote and, unusually for a small camera, S-Video and A/V inputs. Those inputs mean it can record from another source, like a VCR. The rest is plain: a 1/6-inch CCD, a 16x zoom, a 2.5-inch flip-out screen and a 4-pin DV jack that works both ways. Watch your searches, because D70 is also the name of a Nikon camera, so put JVC in front of it.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
- Records
- DV on MiniDV cassettes, in SP or LP. It also saves still photos to SD or MultiMediaCard cards.
- Plays back
- MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera. Sony warns that LP recordings can show mosaic noise on a different camera, so LP tapes play best on the camera that made them.
- Getting footage off it
- The 4-pin DV in/out jack (FireWire) copies the tape to a computer as an exact digital file. Apple removed FireWire support from macOS Tahoe in 2025, so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. It also has S-Video and A/V inputs as well as outputs, and USB for the card stills.
- TV system
- NTSC, the US model (sold as the GR-D70U). JVC also sold a PAL GR-D70, so check the listing says NTSC or ships from the US.
- Battery and power
- JVC BN-V400 series packs. It came with a BN-V408U, and JVC lists the longer BN-V416U and BN-V428U. The AP-V11U or AP-V13U adapter runs it from the wall.
- Viewfinder and screen
- A 2.5-inch flip-out LCD and a small black-and-white LCD viewfinder. If the flip-out screen is dim or dead, the viewfinder still lets you check that it records and plays.
Should come with it
- A BN-V408U or longer BN-V400 series battery
- The AP-V11U or AP-V13U AC adapter
- The A/V and S-Video cable, USB cable and the RM-V718U remote
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
JVC's manual says codes E01, E02 and E06 mean removing the power and waiting, without ejecting the cassette, and E03 or E04 mean ejecting and reinserting it. A code that keeps coming back means service.
- 01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback on the screen is what you want.
- 02Error codes: Ask whether it has shown any E codes during playback or loading. None, or one that cleared the way the manual describes, is fine.
- 03Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
- 04DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. The socket should be clean and undamaged, since it's how footage gets to a computer.
- 05Model number: Check the label in the photos reads GR-D70U, the US version. A GR-D70 from abroad may be PAL.
- 06Battery and power: Look for a BN-V400 series pack and the AP-V11U or AP-V13U adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
- 07Lens: Zoom in on the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.

Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026No GR-D70 for sale right now is titled as working, so we'd buy the $50 kit with the battery and charger, shown with a remote and a tape, and ask the seller for a short video of a MiniDV tape playing back before paying. There are at least 9 listed, and all but one ask $30 to $60 delivered with no working claim, so the $35 to $60 band is the price of a gamble. Ask whether it has shown E codes, since the manual says one that keeps coming back means service, and check the 4-pin DV jack in the photos, since it's how tapes get to a computer. Skip the $133 boxed listing, about three times the median with no test claim, and the $30 untested one from a 97.5% seller.
