The DCR-TRV310 is one of the first Digital8 Handycams, from 1999, the year Sony launched the format. Digital8 was Sony's way to move 8mm owners to digital without leaving their tapes behind. It records DV, the same digital video as MiniDV, onto Hi8 cassettes, and it still plays the old analog Hi8 and Video8 tapes from the family shoebox. The TRV310 had the biggest screen in its range, 3.5 inches where its siblings had 3-inch ones, plus a 20x zoom and NightShot. It's well stocked with jacks: DV in and out, S-Video, RCA audio and video both ways, LANC and a mic input. That makes it a capable bridge between old 8mm tapes and a computer.
Tape check
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
Sony's manual lists C:21 for condensation (leave it an hour), C:22 for dirty heads (clean with a V8-25CLD cassette) and C:31 or C:32 for other faults. Analog playback is the feature you're buying, so it's the one to have proved.
New to old camcorders? How to check a used camcorder covers the tape transport, heads, screens and power, and getting footage off a camcorder explains FireWire and analog capture.
Buying guide
We'd buy the TRV310 titled tested and working with three batteries and the AC adapter at $251 delivered, about $20 under the $270 median. There are at least 32 for sale, most titled tested at $240 to $310 delivered, and it's a good buy for a shoebox of old tapes, since it plays analog Hi8 and Video8 as well as Digital8. That analog playback is what you're paying for, so ask for a short video of an old Hi8 or Video8 tape playing on the 3.5-inch screen, not only a Digital8 one. Its S-Video and RCA outputs work into a USB capture device, but ask before counting on the DV jack for analog tapes. Skip the Video Transfer listings with no seller name on the card and the $655 UK listing whose title another account also uses.
$207.78est. delivered
The lowest-priced TRV310 at $208 delivered from a 100% seller, about $60 under the median. The title makes no test claim and the photo shows the camera alone, so ask for analog tape playback on video and budget for an NP-F pack and the AC-L10 adapter.
