The CCD-TR81 is an early Hi8 Handycam from 1991, two years after Hi8 was first shown. Its manual calls it a Video Hi8 Handycam, and it records Hi8 or standard Video8 with Hi-Fi stereo sound. It's a camera from before flip-out screens, so you shoot through a black-and-white viewfinder, and its 1/2-inch CCD is far bigger than the tiny chips in later Handycams. Where it shines is the jacks. The US model has S-Video and RCA audio and video both in and out, plus LANC, a mic input and headphones, so it doubles as a playback deck for 8mm tapes. It runs on Sony's older NP-55 and NP-77 packs.

The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
Hi8 on Hi8 tape and standard Video8 on 8mm tape, both with AFM Hi-Fi stereo sound, in SP or LP. A standard 8mm tape can't be recorded in Hi8.
Plays back
Hi8 and Video8 tapes recorded in NTSC. It can't play Digital8 recordings.
Getting footage off it
Analog only, but well served: S-Video and RCA video and stereo audio, all in and out. Capture through the S-Video jack into a USB video capture device in real time. The US model has inputs as well as outputs.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. Its PAL counterpart is the CCD-TR705E, which shares its service manual, and a PAL tape won't play in color on an NTSC TV.
Battery and power
Sony's older 6-volt packs: it came with an NP-55, and the manual also lists the NP-55H, NP-66H, NP-77, NP-77H and NP-77HD. The AC-V30 adapter came with it.
Viewfinder and screen
A black-and-white electronic viewfinder and no flip-out screen. The viewfinder is the only way to see what you're shooting or playing, so it has to work.
Should come with it
An NP-55 or NP-77 series battery and the AC-V30 adapter
The A/V cable, since playback needs the RCA or S-Video connection
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The 1991 manual has no error-code table. Like any Sony camcorder, condensation locks out everything but eject until you leave it an hour, and a camera that only powers on hasn't proved its tape transport.
01Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a tape, not just powered on. A short video of playback through the viewfinder or on a TV is what you want.
02Viewfinder: Ask for a photo or video through the black-and-white viewfinder. It's the only screen, so it must show a clear, steady picture.
03Playback picture: Watch the seller's playback for heavy snow or noise. A steady picture means the heads are in fair shape.
04Hi8 tape: Ask whether it was tested with a Hi8 tape as well as standard 8mm. Hi8 recordings need Hi8 tape, so you want both to work.
05Battery: Look for an NP-55 or NP-77 series pack in the photos. Treat a pack this old as dead and price it that way.
06Power: Check the AC-V30 adapter is in the photos. It lets you test the camera without a working battery.
07Model number: Check the label in the photos reads CCD-TR81. A TR705E is the PAL version.
08Lens: Ask for a close photo of the front glass with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze or fungus is what you want.
Nearly every TR81 for sale is titled untested or tells you to read the description, so the $40 to $100 band is what untested cameras ask, not a price for working ones. We'd pay up to about the $61 median for one with a battery or the AC-V30 adapter in the photo, since that lets the seller prove it, and ask for a short video of a tape playing back through the viewfinder or on a TV. There are at least 19 for sale, bare cameras start at $35 with free shipping, and the black-and-white viewfinder is the only screen, so it has to work. Its S-Video and RCA jacks feed a USB capture device for Hi8 and Video8 tapes. Skip the NTSC Stereo Sound titles two accounts share, up to $788 delivered from the UK.
