Canon put the GL1 on sale in September 1999 as a handheld three-chip DV camera, a smaller and simpler sibling to the XL1. Europe knew it as the XM1 and Japan as the XV1. It keeps the XL1's 270,000-pixel Pixel Shift idea but uses smaller 1/4-inch CCDs, and the lens is fixed: a 20x zoom from Canon's Video L series with a fluorite element to control color fringing. Unlike the XL1, it has a flip-out screen. A WD-58 wide converter screws on the front, and Canon sold a floppy-disk still recorder that hooked up through the DV port. The GL2 replaced it in July 2002 with 410,000-pixel chips and more manual control.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
DV on MiniDV cassettes, in SP or LP, with 16-bit stereo or 12-bit four-channel audio. An 80-minute cassette holds 80 minutes in SP and 120 in LP.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera. Sony warns that LP recordings can show mosaic noise on a different camera, so LP tapes play best on the camera that made them.
Getting footage off it
A 4-pin DV in/out terminal (IEEE 1394, the same thing as FireWire) copies the tape to a computer as a digital file, with nothing lost. Apple removed FireWire support in macOS Tahoe (2025), so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. S-Video and the A/V minijack cover analog capture.
TV system
NTSC, the version Canon sold in the Americas as the GL1. The same camera was the XM1 in Europe and the XV1 in Japan, so an XM1 is the PAL camera.
Battery and power
Canon BP-900 series packs. It came with a BP-915, and Canon lists the BP-914, BP-930, BP-930R and BP-941 as options. The CA-910 Compact Power Adapter and DC-905 coupler run it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
A 2.5-inch flip-out LCD of about 122,000 pixels and a 0.55-inch color viewfinder of about 180,000. With two screens, one going dim still leaves you a way to check the camera.
Should come with it
A BP-900 series battery (it came with a BP-915)
The CA-910 Compact Power Adapter and DC-905 coupler
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Canon's manuals say to clean the heads only with a dry cleaning cassette, since wet ones can damage them. At this age the tape transport, battery and both screens need checking before the electronics.
01Which GL: Check the badge in the photos says GL1. A GL2 is a later, different camera, and an XM1 is the PAL version.
02Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short clip of playback is what you want.
03Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the flip-out screen showing a tape playing. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
04Screens: Ask for photos of both the flip-out LCD and the viewfinder with the camera on. Both should be bright, with no dark patches or lines.
05DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV terminal in the photos. The pins should be straight and the socket undamaged.
06Battery and power: Look for a BP-900 series pack and the CA-910 adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
07Lens glass: Zoom in on the front of the lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the GL1 titled tested and working at $258 delivered, just under the $260 median, since the photo shows a battery, the charger, the remote, a Canon bag and a UV filter. There are at least 22 for sale, most titled tested at $220 to $290 delivered, and an auction titled fully working with battery, charger and manual sits at $215 with no bids yet. Ask for a short clip of a MiniDV tape playing on the flip-out LCD and photos of both screens lit, and check the badge says GL1, since a GL2 is a different camera and an XM1 is the PAL version. Its 4-pin DV jack copies tapes to a computer, so plan on a PC or an older Mac with FireWire. Skip the $994 listing from the UK, nearly four times the median.
