Panasonic's AG-DVX100 arrived in October 2002 as a MiniDV camera that could shoot at 24 frames a second, the frame rate of film. The A version was announced in November 2003 and went on sale in January 2004. Adam Wilt's notes list what changed: 16:9 recording in letterbox or squeeze modes from the 4:3 CCDs, adjustable knee and new gamma settings, a new prism with less flare, closer focus, peaking on the screens, a smoother zoom ring and three user buttons. Three 1/3-inch CCDs, a Leica Dicomar 10x zoom and two XLR inputs make it a full working camera. Murderball was shot on a DVX100A, and so was at least the first season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The DVX100B replaced it in late 2005.

Tape check
The tapes, the cables and the power
Records
DV on MiniDV cassettes, at 60i, 30P, 24P or 24P Advanced, which uses a different pulldown for editing. It can also record 16:9 in letterbox or squeeze modes from its 4:3 CCDs.
Plays back
MiniDV tapes recorded on any NTSC DV camera.
Getting footage off it
The 4-pin DV in/out jack (FireWire) copies the tape to a computer as an exact digital file, 24P footage included. Apple removed FireWire support from macOS Tahoe in 2025, so plan on an older Mac or a PC with FireWire. S-Video and composite cover analog capture, and both are also inputs.
TV system
NTSC, the US model. The PAL version, the AG-DVX100AE, records 50i and 25P and has no 24P, so check the model number if 24P is why you're buying.
Battery and power
Panasonic's CGR-D, CGP-D and CGA-D packs: the CGR-D16, CGP-D28 and the long CGA-D54. The AG-B15 AC adapter kit runs it from the wall.
Viewfinder and screen
A 3.5-inch flip-out color LCD and a 0.44-inch color viewfinder, both with focus peaking on the A. Adam Wilt notes the viewfinder's sharpness is limited for manual focus, so many owners focus on the LCD.

What to check
Adam Wilt documents a few quirks on all DVX100 models: audio runs a few fields ahead of the picture, very saturated colors can show patterning, and the manual zoom needs a light touch. None of these mean a fault, but know them before you judge a test clip.
01Which DVX: Read the model plate in the photos. It should say AG-DVX100A, since the original DVX100 and the later B look much the same.
0224P: Check it isn't the PAL AG-DVX100AE if you want 24P. The PAL version records 25P instead.
03Tested with a tape: Ask the seller whether it has recorded and played back a MiniDV tape, not just powered on. A short clip of playback on the LCD is what you want.
04Playback picture: Ask for a photo of the LCD playing a tape. A clean picture without blocky mosaic squares means the heads are in fair shape.
05Audio inputs: Ask whether both XLR inputs have been tested with a microphone. Two working channels are what you want.
06DV port: Zoom in on the 4-pin DV jack in the photos. The socket should be clean and undamaged, since it's how footage gets to a computer.
07Battery and power: Look for a CGR-D16, CGP-D28 or CGA-D54 pack and the AG-B15 adapter in the photos. Treat an old pack as dead and price it that way.
08Lens: Zoom in on the front of the Leica lens in the photos, ideally with light shining in. Clear glass with no haze, fog or web-like fungus is what you want.
We'd buy the DVX100A titled tested with a remote and charger at $462 delivered, shown in a hard case, in the lower half of the $430 to $650 band. There are at least 16 listed, and the most complete tested kit, titled at 182 hours and shown with two batteries, the charger, cables, a remote and the manual, asks $584. Read the model plate in the photos for AG-DVX100A, ask for a short clip of a MiniDV tape recorded and played back, and ask whether both XLR inputs have been tried with a mic. Four listings here add $96 to $171 in shipping, so compare delivered prices. Skip the $336 one from a zero-feedback account and the $1,294 kit with a boom mic, about 2.5 times the median.

The lowest-priced DVX100A titled tested, at $462 delivered, and the photo shows a hard case, the charger, a remote and cables. The title doesn't say a tape was recorded and played, so ask for a clip of both and a photo of the model plate.
